Offensive and defensive security: blue teaming and red teaming explained
There are two main approaches to protecting systems and networks: offensive security and defensive security. This article looks at both, and at what blue teaming and red teaming actually mean.
Defensive security (blue teaming)
Defensive security, often called blue teaming, is about protecting systems, networks and data against potential threats. The aim is to prevent attacks and to keep data available, intact and confidential.
What blue teaming involves:
- Monitoring: watching networks and systems continuously for anomalies or suspicious activity.
- Incident response: reacting quickly to incidents to limit the damage and restore normal operation.
- Patch management: updating software and systems regularly to close known vulnerabilities.
- Firewalls and intrusion detection systems: using tools and technology to filter network traffic and detect attacks.
Offensive security (red teaming)
Offensive security, often called red teaming, takes the attacker’s position. It means simulated attacks on systems and networks, to find weaknesses and to test how well a company’s defences actually work.
What red teaming involves:
- Penetration tests: simulated attacks on systems, to find and exploit weaknesses.
- Social engineering: attempts to get staff to disclose confidential information or take unsafe actions.
- Physical security tests: checking a company’s physical security, for example by attempting to enter secured areas.
Purple teaming
Some companies also work with purple teaming, a combination of red and blue. Offensive and defensive specialists work together to improve security continuously.
Why both matter
Defensive security aims to prevent attacks and protect systems. Offensive security helps a company understand where its weaknesses are and how a real attacker would use them. Together they cover both sides: acting before an attack and reacting to one.
